This album offers extracts from the larger dance repertoire and beyond.
Many of the works chosen draw on nature as a source of inspiration: from adagios that evoke the stilness and calm of a frosty morning (Vivaldi’s “Winter”, Glazunov’s “Seasons”, Bach’s “Air on a G String” …); to the allegros that set the dazzling pace for turns across the floor (Offenbach’s “Gaiete Parisienne”, Strauss’s “Fledermaus”, Waldteufel’s “Skaters” …).
The CD also pays homage to pieces that hold a special place in our collective musical memories: from the strains of Tchaikowsky in the quintessential Christmas ballet, The Nutcracker; to the expansive grandeur of the Viennese Waltz.
There is also room for fun with the lighter festive “Turkey in The Straw” and “Jingle Bells” echoing “Chicken” in Strauss’s Fledermaus and The Enchanting Bells of Mozart’s Magic Flute..
