Glauco Di Lieto - Dance Biography

Glauco Di LietoGlauco started dancing aged 11 and completed his training at Teatro dell'Opera (Rome Opera House) in Italy. By the time he left school at 18 he had performed in several productions with the Rome Opera Ballet Company and appeared on Italian TV shows and talent competitions.

In 1992 he joined Italy's renowned dance company Aterballetto, before being offered a contract with English National Ballet in London. He stayed with ENB for 4 years, working with some of the world's best ballet teachers and most respected choreographers. He performed soloist roles in Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Coppélia, Cinderella, Romeo and Juliet, Swan Lake, Giselle, Napoli, Alice in Wonderland as well as pieces by choreographers such as George Balanchine and Mauro Bigonzetti.

In 1997 Glauco moved to Glasgow to join Scottish Ballet, where he remained until he retired from performing in 2010. At Scottish Ballet, as well as dancing many principal and soloist roles in all the classical productions, he had the opportunity to explore the contemporary repertoire of choreographers like William Forsythe, Richard Alston, Siobhan Davies, Robert North, Hans Van Manen, Ashley Page, Robert Cohan, Stephen Petronio, Krzysztof Pastor and many others.

Glauco started teaching adult ballet classes in 2005 and now teaches students of all ages, working at Dance Studio Scotland, the Dance School of Scotland and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He has worked as a freelance teacher for Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures and Michael Clark Company.

In his ballet classes, Glauco utilises elements taken from all the major ballet methods: Vaganova, Cecchetti and Balanchine. Having studied with teachers from all over the world, he has developed his own individual ballet technique which focuses on maximising strength and minimising strain through correct alignment, awareness of weight and balance, effective breathing and complete coordination.
